There's seems like a special kind of sanctimony that plagues Catholic elites in particular.

Indeed, we shouldn't leap to the opposite conclusion and think that atheists are saints. Of course, secular humanists are often proud of themselves and their cultures, and some are even arrogant or narcissistic. But the question is whether ordinary self-confidence or the humanistic drive for progress should be demonized in the Christian manner.
