There's a difference between falling behind and being oppressed. Liberals may violate their principles sometimes and oppress others, but that oppression wouldn't follow from those principles. On the contrary, liberals are supposed to tolerate social and personal differences unless they're harmful to others. For instance, militant, imperialist jihadism is harmful to others, so it shouldn't be tolerated. The same may be true of Trumpism.

By contrast, conservative principles themselves are inherently oppressive. Conservatives are authoritarians who long for the crystallization of dominance hierarchies. They're implicitly social Darwinians who want to rule over others or to demonstrate their loyalty to worthy leaders. It's all about dominance and submission for them, given the systematic effects of conservative policies (regardless of their obfuscating rhetoric).
