There was a transitional period when Christendom reckoned with proto-modern forces. And of course, Christian theology is unfalsifiable so it's pliable, subject to endless interpretations. Moreover, there are always exceptions to the rule.

But I'm talking here about the core, Pauline myth in the New Testament. Finding God in nature leads to pantheism, and this would look like the impact of naturalistic science on the Church. The authentic expression of Christianity's fundamental myth is anti-modern in that it demonizes Promethean, this-worldly secular progress.
