There seems to be a giant contradiction between the mystical implications of classical theism, and the Church's historical certainty that it's been helping to carry out God's plan. Reason and metaphysics lead them to think God is unknowable; meanwhile, their creed and faith in scriptural revelation somehow enable them to speak for God.
It's a con with inner and outer layers of secrecy. Literalism and certainty about theology and myths are for the illiterate masses, and metaphysical mysticism is for the elites. So the elite priests pander to the masses and don't believe a word of positive Christian doctrine. Otherwise, the elite classical theists are hypocrites or they're badly confused about what they believe.
