There seem to be two kinds of public processes going on here. There's public confirmation or falsification, which is a staple of the scientific method. And there's peer pressure or the madness of crowds which can whip us into a frenzy.

In the first case we let the world's sublime craziness speak for itself. In the second, we let tribalism make us as crazy as the inhuman scale of the natural universe. Seems ironic.
