There is indeed what can be called "mental disorder" in the strict sense: neural or behavioural abnormalities that cause suffering and prevent you from functioning in society. The question I mean to raise is whether there's a higher-level, cultural disorder, one detected from a philosophical or religious rather than a psychiatric standpoint. Psyciatrists presuppose the validity of their cultural standards, whereas maybe some cultural ideals are better than others, given a philosophy that encompasses the sweep of history.
