There are similarities, but also some differences there, so I think the analogy can be taken too far. All cultures may have some ritualistic and faith-based aspects, but the humanistic side of modernity is in some ways the antithesis of theistic religions and theocracies. Elsewhere, though, I've made that comparison in arguing that the "gods" have always hidden in plain sight.
