There are lots of reasons why the left's faith in government is currently naïve. One is that the US no longer separates capitalism and democracy enough, so as I said, big businesses have largely captured government functions. There's too much money in political campaigns, for instance, because of a Supreme Court decision that rolled back that protection for democracy, by declaring that money is free speech.
