The vote for either main party in a postindustrial democracy might not matter when it comes to policies, especially economic ones. But there are still cultural divides which take center stage in elections when policy is left up to the capitalistic marketplace and to lobbyists for plutocrats.
Populism is another strategy of revolt. Besides not voting, you can vote for protest, as in the authoritarian backlash against neoliberalism in various democracies. Trumpism is such a backlash, a vote for no confidence in the neoliberal status quo. But this backlash is reckless and flailing, spurred as it is by demagoguery.
