The view there, then, is of God's character, the idea being that God's an aloof artist. And the instability here is that whether God would intervene in his creation would depend entirely on how we interpret an artist's character. Artists are mercurial, aren't they? Some are perfectionistic tinkerers, while others might destroy their work in a fit of pique. So the indifference of this Creator, in the deistic interpretation would seem quite fragile. At any minute, this divine artist could intervene as a result of some inspiration or whispering from his muse, in which case we'd have theism.

Again, this is dramatized in the movie "Mother!" by Darren Aronofsky, which shows how such an artist could be corrupted by his creation (not above it at all), in which case the artist would seek applause from his fans.

The point is that the artist metaphor can take the religious person in various directions.
