The US is certainly more powerful than Iran. But there's been a global backlash against liberalism and a rise of authoritarian states. George W Bush's Iraq War empowered Iran in the region, and Iran is aligned with China and with Putin's Russia, just in being fellow authoritarian states that are opposed to American-style liberalism.
