The religious answer is childish specifically because it's usually human-centered, and thus naïve, like a child's perspective. The philosophical or sci-fi positing big purposes needn't be so naïve.
I think you're misunderstanding Vervaeke on that point. The dysfunctionality isn't the failure to accept religion, but the leap into abstraction and out of practicality (or the inability to bond with an environment).
