The populist trend that connects George W. Bush, Sarah Palin, and Donald Trump is structurally Christian in another sense since populism is often ironically countercultural. When the deep state is empowered to protect the interests of the wealthy elites, it becomes politically incorrect to suggest that politicians should instead express the interests of the nobodies who make up the bulk of the country. The more vulgar the leader, the better, in that case--and that's Christian in that Jesus, too, would have been profoundly countercultural (just as Jews generally were under the Roman Empire).
