The political terms do get redefined. That's why I try to see what's really at stake in these cultural divides, without deferring to the conventional distinctions.

As George Will explains, "conservatism," too, changed its meaning. There's old world, blood and soil conservatism (the medievalist reaction to modernity), and there's the modern, more libertarian form, which he equates with classic liberalism. I show what's wrong with that analysis here:
