The point I'm trying to make here ties in with my articles on what I call the ancient cold wars between winners and losers, and between mainstream folks and counterculturalists. I'm writing another article that goes into this further, into the possibility that fanatics are likely to be powerless so they concentrate on the cheapest tools there are, on the ones made of ideas. Meanwhile, more dominant individuals have all sorts of material tools and possessions, thanks to their wealth, so they can afford to be cynical or nihilistic. Ideologies, then, would be for losers or for the powerless, especially the marginalized counterculturalists.
