The limited self is the pattern of mental activity produced or sustained by the brain. The pattern is known as our character or personality. I wrote an article on this, called "Buddhism and the Venture of Limited Selves."

You can think of the self as roughly the brain's function in just the way that pumping blood is the heart's function.

I'm not saying there's nothing mysterious about consciousness. (I wrote an article about that too.) But the best available scientific explanation is that the mind/self/ego is mainly whatever the brain is doing, and the brain is just another organ in our body.

Let's not exaggerate the mystery.
