The idea of linear, permanent progress, as opposed to a cyclical kind of progress and regress might, then, be as unnatural and as fragile as personhood itself. How else could an alienated species behave but in an attempted unnatural (non-wild) fashion? Our progress might therefore be tragically heroic at best.
