The idea is that nature is horrific to the extent that it's inherently inhuman since that aspect would clash with our adapted preference for socializing. Our intuitions expect or prefer things to be sociable, which is why we're quick to personify inanimate objects. Scientific objectification entails that nature is fundamentally mindless and thus incapable of socializing with us. This clash is the stuff of existential absurdity.
