The essay is meant to deal with a complication of atheism, which is why I called it a critique. I agree that nihilism goes nowhere, but the threat of nihilism is that philosophical naturalism, liberalism, and the rest of modernity may entail nihilism whether we like it or not. That was Nietzsche's fear. First modernity undermines religion, then it undermines itself in its hypermodern phase.
