The emphasis on what could happen looks like a Minority Report situation in the making, especially when much of the population indulges in conspiratorial thinking. Which other remote possibilities should we build policy on? Should we legislate on the basis of QAnon conspiracies? Who draws the line between the remote possibilities that are reasonable and those that are deranged? Maybe we know the difference when we see it, but we also divide into opposing camps, into those that are and those that aren't paranoid. I think that growing tribalism is a bigger problem for American democracy.
