The Eastern societies are more collectivistic so their concept of the self isn't so pronounced. Their goal is to see through the illusion of the self, but if the collective replaces the individual, that only kicks the conflict with the environment up to the social level.

But sure, the self or mind can be interpreted as an interface between the environment and the body.
