The divide between the northern and southern states is interesting. Of course, the temperature differences isn't as extreme in the modern world, with air conditioning, but there is that cultural divide. Even when the Democratic Party was pro-slavery and there wasn't yet a Republican Party, the hotter, southern states were the more racist and slave-holding ones by 1858, as the map in the article below shows.
It's a little spooky to think of how much we're duped by such environmental forces.
