The centrist, corporate liberals that run the DNC may indeed represent only what Thomas Frank calls the professional class, or the affluent, highly-educated urbanites (roughly the richest 10% of the country). It's not really a left-wing or social democratic, progressive party. It's more leftist than the GOP, but that's saying next to nothing because of how far to the right the Republicans have swung.
