The analogy may be misplaced, but that doesn't mean it's useless. Thomism ruled in Christendom for a thousand years, with its talk of "natural rights," so the weak analogy was at least politically useful as a conservative rationalization.

Are you saying there would be no group selection story to tell about our future dependence on technology? Some such story should already be needed to explain that dependence. The difference between humans and transhumans would just be a difference in degree, as I point out here:
