That's the exoteric message of Christianity, not the esoteric, sustainable one. The exoteric message keeps Christians childlike so they'll submit to their religious institutions. The esoteric (Gnostic, more Greek Orthodox) message is that Christians should follow Jesus only by being themselves Christlike. The Jesus narrative is a metaphor, a model to be followed not in its particulars, but in the overall way of adopting an uncompromising countercultural perspective. A Christian should sacrifice his natural, earthly self (and thus his chances of succeeding in secular terms), and be reborn as someone who sees the bigger picture.

What I'd expect from a superintelligent deity is that he wouldn't expect the imperfect creatures he created to act perfectly, and to punish them for being something they're not. That would be just tyrannical lunacy.
