That's quite the personal background.

I think Dennett certainly gets at a big part of religious thinking in Breaking the Spell. Religion's universality does suggest a biological susceptibility, although I think memetics is an oversimplification. I'd add a sociological layer to the explanation, which is supported by the history of how religions have evolved. As far as I know, Dennett also leaves out the power of religious experiences via entheogens. That's another source of the madness.
