That's an interesting comparison. It reminds me of the British monarchy. I recently finished watching The Crown, and there's an episode in the final season that questions whether the monarchy should be modernized. The Queen concludes it shouldn't, since what the people want is the mystique as an escape from their mundane lives. (Likewise, the Catholic Church wants to maintain its mystique.)
