That's a great point. I gave these conservatives far too much credit in steelmanning their justifications, forgetting that in the ancient world, humanists were few and far between. Protecting women was indeed an issue of property rights for men. Still, it comes to the same point: the men would have felt like protectors not of women's rights but of their treasured property and lineage. I'm going to add this point to the article.
