That's a good point about the difference between competing with each other and competing with nature. The latter competition might sublimate our primitive instinct, so that we cooperate to deal with the bigger threat (nature's impersonality or indifference to our survival).
There are different kinds of competitions, too. In capitalism, the winner can take all, whereas artists are often more cooperative or quasi-socialist in appreciating each other's work and talents. Then again, capitalism has largely overtaken art too.
That Latin line isn't a quotation, by the way, at least not as far as I know. It's just a fun little way to add some cryptic content (an allusion to Lovecraft's Necronomicon concept). I mean that that line comes from me, not from someone else. And no, I don't speak Latin.
