I take the eerie possibility to be a dark interpretation of monotheism and Advaita Vedanta. The hypothesis is implicit or hinted at in Orphism, Gnosticism, and the simulation theory of the universe.
It's interesting to consider whether there are internal signs that the universe might be a means of escaping from a horrific monistic prison. You suggest the laws of nature might amount to dream logic. But the realist will say that this hypothesis is empty because permanent dream logic is as good as material reality. So Cartesian hyperskepticism is idle.
At the very least, I think, this interpretation discounts the more politically correct formulations of monotheism. That is, the dark scenario is more plausible than the optimistic notion of a benevolent creator God. So the dark scenario makes for an internal criticism of theistic religions.
