I agree there's a political dimension to the debate, but I think there's also an existential one, and I emphasize the latter because it seems fundamental.
It's a question of strategies for coping with the existential condition of being empowered persons thrown into a godless wilderness. How do we blot out the horrors of nature? With theistic projections or with the secular enterprise of technoscientific progress (the building of an alternative, artificial domain)?
