Thanks. What you say here about the destructive downside of modernity looks like the relatively enlightened take we all have now and again, when we reflect on the difference between our better self and our animal impulses. Some of those impulses are productive and empathetic, but animals have a selfish streak that blindly serves their genes and the amoral needs of their species. When we step out of our behavioural automations, as it were, and reflect on what's really going on, we're liable to feel alienated by how out of place sentience and intelligence are in nature. The universe didn't evolve to serve clever mammals like us, which is evidently why the universe is so astronomically huge. The wilderness is an inhuman place, so we face the existential challenge of naturalizing ourselves or of humanizing nature. Or maybe there's a third option?
