It's certainly hard to be authentic or our best self all the time. We put on masks to get by. It's hard even to know our true self; we can deceive ourselves too. Perhaps there's no such thing as our true self, and we're just our internal monologue that reassures us as our brain struggles to make sense of an alien world.
