Indeed, there is that ambiguity, and something I tried to get across is that even the deflationary interpretation (mania and mental illness) has the power of revelation, because it means that human history has been propelled by a colossal blunder which has nevertheless bootstrapped us into the Anthropocene. It means the universe has a dark sense of humour.
