Sure, you wouldn't expect an enlightened person to draw lines in the sand and divide folks into factions. But the fact is that even those ancient spiritual traditions imply that you're either enlightened or your not. There's a lot of fudging about whether the lack of enlightenment matters (because the individual self may not be "real" in any case). But there's certainly an Eastern form of the cold war in question, between what I'm calling intellectuals and the less reflective folks. There are degrees of initiation, and the enlightened sages seem ambivalent about the merits of the unenlightened.
I'll be writing something soon on two kinds of childishness, the enlightened kind and the deplorable, consumerist kind, which might shed some light on this.
