Sure, that's a plausible reason for such a coverup.

But I think talk is cheap, and polls are often flawed. We may say we're fine with such and such being the case, but we might just be fooling ourselves. Posing as a true believer and claiming to believe this or that is one thing, but living with proof would be another.
