String theory might be another case of theory getting too far away from experimental evidence. Another name for such "theory" might be "philosophical speculation." There's a kernel of truth, then, in saying that science can become more faith-based than the textbook account of science would allow, although that wouldn't mean science is as faith-based as theistic religion. Capitalism and professionalism, too, may be distorting the scientific method, as seen in the replication crisis in the soft sciences. But the general distinction between science and religion still holds, if only because the disciplinary ideals differ.
