Sometimes Vervaeke sounds like an essentialist, and sometimes, when he's speaking like a cognitive scientist about mental functions, he sounds like an instrumentalist.

Vervaeke thinks he does account for alienation. He explains it away as mental dysfunction--and he does so with instrumentalist, quasi-Aristotelian (teleological) reasoning.
