Some wise words. I agree completely that God would have nothing to do with this prohibition of comedic “blasphemy.” This is an entirely human matter which is therefore wrapped up in hypocrisy and power games. Assuming the leaders of Islam aren’t wholly cynical and are true believers, what they must hate about blasphemy is that it opens up philosophical doubts.

Again, my speculation here is that part of this may be purely climatological. Desert culture puts a premium on simplicity for survival’s sake, which makes for a conservative attitude towards traditions. I imagine such a Muslim leader wants to say, “Once something has been figured out and codified, no need to reinvent the wheel. So stop making me think too much because it’s super hot out here!” But remove Muslims from the desert or give them a more oppressive history and they may snap out of that desert funk and become more jaded and humble like Jews.
