This article is philosophical so it operates at a higher level of generality. That's why I didn't get into all the causes of our relative autonomy in nature. Language is certainly one of those causes. The cerebral cortex and our opposable thumbs are other such causes. Language enables us to organize and master our capacities for abstraction and imagination, all of which produced culture, which made for an alternative, artificial environment that in turn accelerated our preoccupation with ourselves via a positive feedback loop.
