So you mean the public and private sectors are entangled such that we couldn't hope to isolate the variables in an economic experiment on the merits of capitalism?

I explain that entanglement, by the way, in Thomas Frank's terms, by positing a common professional class of elite neoliberals, which makes for the revolving door in Washington.

And when would you say economists discovered that market failures are the norm? Around the Great Depression?

Assuming their failure is the norm, all that utopian neoclassical talk of capitalist economies being well-oiled machines reaching optimality in the limit case is bullshit, then, right? Yet is that utopianism still operative in what's called orthodox economics? Aren't the misleading mathematical tools still being used?
