Right, but the connections go deeper than that, for Gray. We're supreme, for Western secular humanists, because we retain naturalistic versions of spirits or souls, despite the obsolescence of the theology that made sense of that value judgment. So Gray's more pessimistic in his interpretation of atheism, as am I, to some extent.
