Remember, it's a "cold war" I'm positing, so the separation of the two classes is part of it. Sure, the two classes ignore each other, which allows the implicit resentment to fester. Hence the populist rallying cry about the perfidy of "the elites," including not just celebrities and politicians but snobbish intellectuals and academics. And hence the liberal elite's condescension towards the savagery of the Trumpian rural masses.

These are indeed two social classes that go their own ways even when they're living in the same country. So how sustainable is that?
