Religions have been practically schizophrenic for a long, long time, because the sacred is at odds with the profane order. Religious folks worship what they hold to be sacred, on special occasions and in special places, which they then bracket as they go back to their mundane daily tasks.

This dynamic that goes back to prehistoric shamanism--the division between the psychedelic spirit world, and the less enchanted form of nature that's ordinarily perceived--was exacerbated by the modern revolutions, which made theism's mythic conceptions obsolete.

So, for instance, your job in computers works according to modern expectations which are at odds with the presuppositions of ancient theistic religions.
