Really? You think David Sirota creates myths to justify consumerism that’s harming the planet? He doesn’t talk about environmentalism in that video, as I recall, but I assume that as a progressive he’d be in favour of dramatic environmental regulations. Maybe you mean that anyone who’s not a radical environmentalist is beholden to some self-serving myths. That might be true.
I’ve argued elsewhere, though, that we can’t really do without myths. We all have our myths. Our inner narrative that serves our personal identity is a myth or a model that drastically simplifies what’s going on in our brain. All concepts are generalizations that simplify, and all memories edit, idealize, and thus falsify. We’re saturated in fictions.
