Quibbles and apologetics. Capitalism provides an environment of incentives by rewarding greed, selfishness, and amoral calculations of personal advantage with private property (protected by law). Capitalism is inherent to the modern period which saw the explosion of population growth and of technological advances, from the scientific and industrial revolutions onward. Capitalism is the economic engine of innovation but also of myopic, organized selfishness or of the Wetiko-like insanity of consumerism.
Blaming the modern destruction of the biosphere on a handful of government and grass-roots decisions is laughable. Why do you suppose governments don't reign in the fossil fuel industry? Is it because of the strength or the weakness of democracy? Is it because of the revolving door between the public and private sectors, so that politicians subsidize big businesses to be rewarded by them with lobbyist jobs when they leave office? That's crony capitalism which has captured the regulatory functions of democracy.
And you're going to blame pollution on conservationist groups? How very Orwellian of you.
Try looking at the big picture, and you'll see further when you take your head out of the sand.
