Philosophy is very general reasoning that means to reconcile science with our intuitions and daily experience. So there can be a philosophy about anything, including science, art, and even plants--although I think Sanford was musing about a future philosophy of plants since there's much that's established on that subject. The more science learns about plants that's striking and challenging, the more incentive there will be to philosophize on the meaning of those findings.
