No, I think that's plausible. Religions or at least farfetched mainstream ideologies and practices are ubiquitous for a reason. The alternative of a hyper-rational, perfectly enlightened standpoint is intolerable for most people, and even counterproductive. Being a person as opposed to an animal is inherently disorienting, which is why we're indoctrinated as children and why we've built civilization as a self-serving replacement for the inhuman wilderness. But not all fictions are equally worthy, and some distractions are better than others in dealing with this existential predicament.
