My model of art is quite different. Authentic art is neo-shamanic in being an individualistic dive into the unconscious for insights that are typically subversive and countercultural. Hence, the best art doesn't need religion as its "context"; rather, it needs a mainstream culture that tends to corrupt itself via its politicization. Art that becomes commodified is just art that sells out to become mainstream rather than countercultural. It doesn't matter whether the mainstream culture is religious or secular since either can become corrupt, in which case its norms will offend the idealistic sensibilities of artistic types. Early modern art, for instance, flourished as a humanistic counterculture that rejected Christendom, the domination of a religious culture.
