My argument wasn't semantic. I was talking about a sociological explanation of religious behaviour which posits universal, tribal phenomena. Dictionaries settle semantic questions, not philosophical or sociological ones.
The vast majority of monotheists are hypocrites, so their attitude toward religion is biased towards excusing their laziness and religious inauthenticity. Why should their opinion carry the day?
They'd say they worship God just by sitting in a church once a week and putting some of their money on the plate that's passed around. Who says they know anything about religion? Who says they understand what "worship" really means?
The vast majority of people may determine the conventional meaning of words in a language, but that doesn't mean their opinion suffices as an explanation of what the world's really like.
